A defibrillator at De Montil.
Every year, more than 15,000 people in Belgium die as a result of cardiac arrest, which boils down to one person every thirty minutes. In order to survive cardiac arrest, intervention speed is of the essence. Action needs to be taken within 4 to 5 minutes. When people suffer cardiac arrest, their heart starts to fibrillate, i.e. quiver, and with a defibrillator, the heart's normal rhythm can be restored. Hence, access to an automated defibrillator can markedly improve victims' chances of survival. Aware of this fact, we felt that it would be judicious to also install one of these devices in our convention centre. On 3 December 2011, the equipment will be officially presented by Dr. Peter Peytchev, cardiologist at our Lady's Hospital in Aalst-Asse, and demonstrated by Jan Desmedt, nurse with the Asse Fire Brigade. The defibrillator will be deployable both in the conference and function rooms and in the De Montil sports centre.
